Our Story

A Family Connection That Became a Mission

My connection to Tanzania spans generations.

What began with my mother's work in East Africa eventually became part of our own family story. Years later, while living in Tanzania with my husband and children, I had the opportunity to experience the country's extraordinary culture, creativity, and craftsmanship firsthand.

It was there that I discovered the handmade baskets and home goods that would eventually inspire UKILI. These weren't simply beautiful objects. They represented generations of skill, tradition, and the determination of women working to support their families.

Why UKILI

The name UKILI comes from the Swahili word for the natural material used to create many of the handcrafted baskets in our collection.

But UKILI is about more than beautiful home décor.

From the beginning, my goal was simple: create meaningful opportunities for artisans—especially women in rural communities—while bringing thoughtfully made pieces into homes around the world.

Every basket, bowl, and textile carries a story of craftsmanship passed down through generations.

The Women Behind the Work

Many of the women we partner with are mothers, grandmothers, and entrepreneurs.

Their craft provides income, independence, and the ability to invest in their families and communities.

When you choose UKILI, your purchase does more than decorate your home. It helps preserve traditional skills and supports artisans earning a sustainable livelihood through their work.

Why It Matters To Me

As a mother, I understand the desire to create opportunities for our children and build a better future for our families.

That is why I believe every purchase should do double duty: bring beauty into your home while creating meaningful impact for the people who made it.

Thank you for being part of this story.

With love,

Helen
